Know Before You Go

I'm sure many of you remember that catchy phrase from one of the big weather sites or something like that- because I can hear it loud and clear as I type it:

Know before you go!

For instance, will it rain today? Tell me, oh mighty technology, before I step outside so I know to grab my fashionable zebra umbrella or not! Will there be snow to look forward to? Should I wear my extra warm scarf or skip it today?

We are a generation who likes to plan. We like to be aware and see exactly what is coming before it reaches us. However, as probably all of us know, life strays from this pattern quite often.

The truth is, life is completely unpredictable. We can try to plan it out and anticipate its every move- but only God truly knows what the next step will be in His predestined plot for our lives. He has it all planned out- we are foolish to think we can control it, no matter how often we crack open our color-coded planners. (I recently invested in one of these and I'm in love so totally not saying anything against them!!)

As we carefully jot down our schedules and map out timelines in our heads of how our life is going to pan out, we seemingly malfunction when something goes astray. Woah, woah, woah- that was not on our list! What's going to happen now? I can never fix this. I've ruined the whole plan!

Breathe, my friend.

God's planner is a lot more organized than ours, and it's full of sweet surprises and delights that he wants to pour on you, if you'll hand over the reigns to Him. It is also full of diversion plans that only He is capable of scribing.

This morning, with sleepy eyes and a caffeine-deprived headache, I cracked open my bible, reluctantly, might I add, to the book of Daniel. I had just started this book this week, and I knew God put it on my heart to study. But let me tell y'all something, and this is no way me complaining...BUT... working part-time, babysitting, keeping up with the blog & taking 18 credits of literature courses (oh, and Spanish 101...sigh) is kicking my behind.

I know I signed up for this, and I'm young, and people have done worse, but still.

The last thing I wanted to do this morning was get up earlier so I could read my bible. But, guys, I took fifteen extra minutes to do so, and my heart is replenished and refreshed.

This morning's reading was about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. I remember these dudes from my early days of Sunday school, but never really dove into their story as an adult.

Let me tell you something. We can all learn from their bold faith. They KNEW before they went.

King Nebuchadnezzar (who in their right mind names their child this... pretty rad though- I must say) sentences these guys into the flaming furnace because they refuse to worship his gods made of gold.

Imagine that? That certainly would be a slight change in your color-coded plans...

Yet these guys did not flinch. They did not even fear.

They KNEW that their God would take care of it. Now, this is important. Read how they answered King CrazyName here:

"If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from your majesty's hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, your majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." Daniel 3:17

Woah. They did not fear because they KNEW their God would handle it. Notice, that they stated in BOLD FAITH, that God is able.

He is able to handle ANY situation in your life.

What strikes me most, though, is they even go further on to say "even if he does not...we will not serve your gods". God may not deliver us from things we want Him to. But, we need to understand that His will and His way are higher and more precious than anything this world has to offer us.

As the story continues, we see that the three go into the furnace and come out untouched.

"They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them." Daniel 3:27

Let us approach any furnace that seems to stare us in the face with the kind of bold faith that these three guys with the cool names had.

God is able. And He WILL deliver us. And even if He doesn't...He has better plans. He is with us. He is not against us. Believe this today.

Know He is able, before you go into the fires of life.

xoxo
