To the Ones Who Never Feel Chosen

Chosen. Something we all strive to be.

Whether you admit it, or not, you somehow seek to be chosen in one way or another.

In a relationship, for a promotion at work, for the 50/50 raffle, to play for that team; the list goes on and on.

We devote our entire lives, aspiring to being chosen, and when we aren't, our souls feel crushed. There is a wave of disappointment that washes over our entire being. Sometimes it lingers for a long period of time.

I get it. I beat myself up over this all of the time.

The voice echoes in my head:

"Why didn't you get that job you thought you qualified for?"

"Why does she always go to her for advice and not you?"

"Why do you have to work for everything and he doesn't?"

"Why aren't you good enough for someone to choose you?"

Wow. As I type the words, it nearly breaks my heart. But it's reality. It's the main thought that circulates my head day after day. Everyone seems to have someone. A best friend. A significant other. Someone who chooses you day in and day out.

And so, with every inch of fiber within me, I have tried to change. I've dissected everything I do, and try to put on a show to captivate my audience. Surely, that will entice people. Someone will have to choose me now, right?

Wrong.

The truth is, people are not always going to choose you. In fact, it's incredibly rare that they do.

Do not look for worth in being chosen by anything of this world. You will not find it there.

The truth is:

People will not always choose you, but Jesus will.

God made you in His image. He knew everything about you as He knit you in your mother's womb. He knew every mistake you'd make. Every flaw you focus on. Every distinct trait about you.

And still, He made you. Because He loves you. And He's chosen you.

"...he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you; Do not be afraid...my servant...whom I have chosen." Isaiah 44:2

"You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings." 1 Corinthians 7:23

As I read those scriptures this morning, I immediately brought a highlighter to the text as tears found their way down my cheek.

Why am I striving so hard to be chosen on this earth? What good does it do if I finally get someone to "choose" me? I have already been chosen. The ultimate price has been paid.

Jesus got on that cross, for me & you- every single one of us.

Wow.

There is nothing you can do to make Him turn away from you. He already chose you. All you have to do is believe it. Receive it. Understand that there is nothing you can do to deserve it.

Because He has chosen you, He will not leave you or forsake you. He is with you always. Rest in that and find joy as you choose to live for Him.

Now that we know He has chosen us, we must choose Him, too.
